Little things.

Throughout 2021 photographer Catharine Neilson was commissioned by NSW Health Infrastructure to photographed the Maitland Hospital at work during its last year on the High Street site. For the exhibition A Conspicuous Object - The Maitland Hospital at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery she selected two bodies of work from her many photographs. This thoughtfully chosen and curated selection is entitled Little Things.

As an artist, I have always been drawn to the little things, the small details often overlooked that say so much about who we are and the world that we live in. Maitland Hospital, with its 175-year history, is full of these artefacts. In a space that is often defined by protocol and bureaucracy, it is delightful to see the unique clues that tell its story. In the anachronisms and alterations I see the hospital’s history; in decorations and personal touches I see people’s creativity, resourcefulness, their sense of humour and the values that they share.
